Kuwait gold market

Gold in Kuwait is quoted per gram in Kuwaiti dinars, across 18k, 21k, 22k and 24k purities. The market's centre is the gold souk in Kuwait City, supplemented by branded mall retailers. Jewellery in 21-karat and 22-karat dominates retail counters — the Gulf standard for bridal and festive pieces — while 24-karat serves bars, coins and investment demand.

Prices benchmark to the international spot price converted into dinars, adjusted for import costs and making charges. Those making charges are a defining feature of the Kuwaiti market: they typically add 5 to 15 percent to the metal value and are often negotiable in the souk, while branded outlets keep fixed or semi-fixed structures. The dinar's strength keeps Kuwaiti prices relatively stable in local-currency terms, though it also makes Kuwait a comparatively expensive market for exporters selling into it.

Buyers tend to be well informed: comparing making charges across three or four shops is normal, and regulars build relationships with trusted jewellers. Wedding seasons drive the heaviest footfall, with families buying complete bridal sets. Kuwait's large expatriate communities — particularly Indian, Pakistani and Egyptian — add steady demand for the jewellery styles of their home countries, and the souk caters to all of them side by side.

Taxes and rules

Kuwait has not introduced VAT, so there is no value-added tax layer on gold purchases — although Kuwait signed the GCC-wide VAT framework agreement, implementation has been repeatedly delayed. Imported jewellery does attract customs duty — typically around 5 percent depending on origin and product code — which feeds into retail prices along with shipping, insurance and compliance costs.

Travellers should know the declaration rule in force since July 2025: all forms of gold — bars, coins and jewellery, even worn pieces — must be declared at Kuwait International Airport if their total value reaches KWD 3,000 or more, as must cash and financial instruments at the same threshold. Penalties apply for non-declaration. As always, keep purchase invoices and confirm karat markings at the point of sale.

For zakat calculators

Kuwait's per-gram quoting maps directly onto the 87.48-gram gold nisab — multiply your grams by the current per-gram rate for your karat. Because making charges are negotiable and vary, base the calculation on the metal value rather than what you paid all-in. The lower silver nisab is available for mixed wealth, and the dinar's stability means the rate you check today is unlikely to move much tomorrow.

No — Kuwait has not introduced VAT. Imported jewellery carries customs duty of around 5 percent depending on origin and product code, which is reflected in retail prices.

Yes, particularly in the traditional souk, where making charges of 5 to 15 percent are commonly negotiable. Branded mall retailers tend to keep fixed structures.
