Here's the uncomfortable truth: memorizing is easy β keeping it is hard. Every Hafiz will tell you the real battle starts after memorization. This guide gives you the complete revision system so nothing you memorized ever slips away.
Revise & Never Forget
The complete Hifz revision system β memorize once, keep forever.
The #1 rule of revision
Revision before new lesson. If your Sabqi isn't solid today, you don't take new Sabaq today. No exceptions. This single rule separates Huffaz who retain from those who "finished" but can't recite.
The 3-layer revision system
Layer 1 β Daily Sabqi (last 7 days)
Every day, before new memorization: recite the last 7 days of Sabaq from memory. This takes 10β20 minutes and is non-negotiable. Miss this and cracks form within days.
Layer 2 β Weekly Manzil (rotation)
Divide everything you've memorized into 7 portions β recite one portion daily. Memorized 5 Juz? That's less than 1 Juz a day. Memorized 15 Juz? ~2 Juz daily. The rotation means every ayah gets recited at least once a week.
| Memorized | Daily Manzil | Full cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1β5 Juz | ~15β20 pages | 7 days |
| 6β15 Juz | ~1β2 Juz | 7 days |
| 16β30 Juz | ~2β4 Juz | 7 days |
Layer 3 β Monthly deep repair
Once a month, identify your weakest Juz (the one you stumble on most) and give it a full week of intensive revision β recite it daily until it flows like water.
What to do when you've forgotten a portion
It happens to everyone. Don't panic β follow the repair protocol:
- Diagnose: recite the portion and mark exactly where you stumble (usually it's the joints between ayahs).
- Re-memorize the weak spots using listenβpauseβrepeat β treat them as new Sabaq.
- Chain them back into the surrounding ayahs (verse linking).
- Put it on daily Sabqi for 7 days straight β promote it back to the rotation.
Forgotten portions come back 3β5Γ faster than the first memorization. The foundation is still there.
Revision in daily life (5 hidden slots)
- π In prayer: recite Manzil portions in Sunnah/Nafl prayers β 5+ built-in slots daily.
- πΆ Walking/commuting: recite aloud while walking. Movement + recitation = strong encoding.
- π Before sleep: 5-minute listen of tomorrow's Manzil portion (sleep consolidation).
- π₯ With a partner: weekly recitation circle β take turns, correct each other.
- π§ Passive listening: play your Manzil Juz as background during chores β familiarity maintenance.
Track it: the 30-Juz map
Mark every Juz as π’ solid, π‘ shaky, or π΄ needs repair. Your monthly deep-repair week always targets the π΄ ones. Update the map monthly β watching reds turn green is deeply satisfying.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I revise memorized portions?
Last 7 days: daily (Sabqi). Everything else: at least once a week on rotation (Manzil). Weakest Juz: intensive week monthly.
I've forgotten a whole Juz. Do I start over?
No β re-memorize only the weak spots as new Sabaq, chain them back, and put the Juz on daily Sabqi for a week. It returns 3β5Γ faster than the first time.
Should I revise before or after new memorization?
Always BEFORE. Revision first, new lesson second. If revision takes the whole session, skip new Sabaq that day β that's the rule.
How long should daily revision take?
Sabqi: 10β20 min. Manzil: 20β60 min depending on how much you've memorized. Total revision often exceeds new-memorization time β that's normal and correct.
Can I revise while doing other things?
Passive listening helps maintenance, but real revision needs focus β recite aloud, from memory, with attention. Use passive listening as a supplement, not a replacement.
